I have the ISO image file (that is,
*.iso ) and I am trying to boot my VirtualBox installation with this image. Is it possible? I know how to mount my ISO image to my filesystem (on my host machine), but I don't think VirtualBox boots an OS from a location on my file system.

I've even tried to mimic mounting, such that VirtualBox thinks it has to boot from the CD drive, but this failed.
What is the correct way to boot an OS from an ISO image in VirtualBox?
My host machine is Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) and my VirtualBox version is 4.1.4.

Nov 02, 2018 Boot and install from ISO in VirtualBox in Windows. NOTE: We assume that you already have installed VirtualBox. Step 1: Launch VirtualBox. Click the New button to open Create Virtual Machine wizard. Step 2: Enter a name for the virtual machine, select the type of operating system you want to install by selecting an entry from the drop-down list, and then select the version before clicking on. Navigate to where you downloaded the installer.iso file. Click on this file and click Open at the bottom of this window. The file name you chose should then appear beside the icon of the CD in the center column. Click OK at the bottom of the storage page and start the virtual machine. It should boot off the.iso just as if it were a physical one. Converting an iso to vdi is different from simply booting VirtualBox from an iso, instead it is taking an.iso image, for example of a live boot image, and then converting that itself to a.vdi VirtualBox virtual disk image. This is useful for many reasons, whether to customize that image file, or for administration or testing purposes. Boot an ISO Image Directly From VirtualBox. VirtualBox is a hugely popular free software to create and run virtual operating systems and it can run a virtual CD/DVD disc inside a virtual machine (VM) by using the computer’s real optical drive or an ISO image.

I would venture to say you are overcomplicating things! You only need to mount the iso in the virtual machine.
Virtualbox Run Iso Image
Should boot into the iso like it's in the disc drive.

This example uses the ISO file you imported in Section 8.3, “Importing an ISO file” to create a virtual machine, and deploy it in the server pool.
To create a virtual machine from an ISO file:
The virtual machine is created and deployed to an Oracle VM Server in the server pool. To see the virtual machine, select the server pool in the navigation pane and select Virtual Machines from the Perspective drop-down list in the management pane toolbar.
